Evaluation
At the end of each semester, students receive a formal report card indicating their progress in Art, Music, P.E. and Spanish. Students do not receive a report card for Library or Technology.
Students are graded on the following scale:
Exceeds – Student is working above their actual grade level standards.
Meets – Student is meeting all standards for their grade level.
Progressing – Student is progressing toward the goal of meeting all grade level standards.
Below – Student is working below grade level expectations.
Not Evaluated – Student was not evaluated for a variety of circumstances. For example, the student missed classes due to tutoring/absences, or the concept was not taught that semester.
Behavior and Participation - We may evaluate students on their level of classroom behavior and participation. These areas often have a direct impact on student achievement and progress.
Progress Reports and Assessment
Art
Colorado Visual Art Standards:
Standard 1: Observe and Learn to Comprehend
Standard 2: Envision and Critique to Reflect
Standard 3: Invent and Discover to Create
Standard 4: Relate and Connect to Transfer
Students are assessed using the Colorado Visual Art Standards through their artwork, behavior, and participation in class.
Artwork shows good effort and planning.
Artwork is complete. All areas and parts are carefully thought out.
Artists include elements of art such as line, color, pattern, texture and shape and some principles of art such as rhythm, contrast and balance.
Artists show respect for materials, tools and cleanings up their workspace at the end of class.
Artists show respect for classmates' artwork by not touching and by sharing positive comments.
Artists stay positive about their own artwork and work the whole class time on their own artwork or helping a classmate or teacher.
Music
Music students are evaluated in the four Colorado Music Standards (K-5), Participation, and Behavior. Evaluations become more complex as students advance to the following grades. Students transition from finding high or low/fast or slow, to comprehending elements of a piece of music, performing with others, and understanding terms, symbols, styles, forms and composers. Assessments consider teacher observations of all four Standards areas and are typically conducted aurally.
Standard 1: Expression in Music.
Standard 2: Creation in Music.
Standard 3: Theory in Music
Standard 4: Aesthetic Valuation of Music
Physical Education
Physical Education is evaluated with skill checklists, teacher observation and oral assessments. Students are also evaluated in the areas of behavior, effort and participation, which are recorded during each class period.
Physical and Personal Wellness (all grade levels)
Movement Competence and Understanding (all grade levels)
Prevention and Risk Management (1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades)
Emotional and Social Wellness (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades)
Spanish
Students are evaluated in Behavior, Participation and the four Colorado World Language Standards.
Standard 1: Communication in Languages Other Than English
Standard 2: Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures
Standard 3: Connections with Other Disciplines and Information Acquisition
Standard 4: Comparisons to Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture
Students in all grade levels are primarily assessed through oral communication with the teacher and/or with classmates. Students in second through fifth grade are also graded using written communication assessments. Written assessments are graded by Señora Brewer and sent home in Monday Folders. If a student receives a Progressing or Below grade on a written assessment, they are invited to correct and resubmit it to try to get a Meets grade. Students cannot resubmit work for an Exceeds grade. Meets is the highest score possible on resubmitted work. Students can also seek help from Señora Brewer during Astro Club time.
Our goal is for every student get at least a Progressing or a Meets in all Standards, for all Specials. If a student has received a grade of Below on multiple assessments within a particular Standard, the teacher will call their parents/guardians to discuss their progress. Please email their teacher anytime to know how your child is progressing in any particular subject area.
