Purpose and Expectations

Homework reinforces skills and concepts taught in class. Teachers determine assignments based on student needs and recognize that students have commitments outside school. Assignments should be concise, meaningful and relevant, with clear expectations.

Students are expected to complete homework independently and on time. If your child struggles to complete it independently or spends excessive time on assignments, contact the teacher. Teachers provide information about units of study, timely grades and feedback.

Supporting Homework at Home

Set a regular time and space for homework and keep communication open with the teacher. Students in grades three through five use planners as a daily home–school communication tool. Parents can review planners to monitor assignments and identify concerns.

Work Missed During Absences

Teachers do not prepare work in advance of a planned absence. They save missed work for the student’s return. Students or parents collect the assignments after returning, and students have one day to complete make-up work for each day absent, subject to the provisions on Attendance.
